Lawmakers from the Democratic Republic of Congo have tasked their president Felix Tshisekedi to cut ties with Uganda, over allegations that Kampala is directly facilitating the M23 rebels.
The DRC lawmakers say they have garnered sufficient evidence to prove that Uganda is in direct support of the notorious rebel group dubbed M23. They contend that the UPDF is secretly supplying arms to the Kivu based rebel group which is directly battling the DRC military in the Eastern region. The lawmakers consequently want the UPDF to suspend its operation shujja and vacate DRC territory with immediate effect.
The DRC Lawmakers also urge President Tshisekedi to dismiss the Uganda Airlines flights from using the skies of the DRC. This comes just moments after the Ugandan national carrier had just been granted air space in the DRC.
Presently, several DRC activists have stormed the streets of Kinshasa and other major regional cities to demonstrate against the deployment of the UPDF and Rwandan troops. The protest comes amidst another East African Community deployment championed by the Kenyan Defence Forces.
UPDF speaks out
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces through its public relations office has dismissed the allegations stating that the purveyors of this misinformation simply have a hidden agenda.
The UPDF Deputy Spokesperson says some DRC politicians have a hidden agenda and intend to mislead their president into cutting ties with Uganda. He however says they will not relent from their operation Shujja till they are asked to recall it in a communication from their bosses in Kampala.
